You Don’t Have to Fit In

My Princess…You Don’t Have To Fit In

“I know you want to be accepted by others, but you were not made to fit in. You, My Princess, were created to stand out. Not to draw attention to yourself, but to live the kind of life that leads others to Me. Remember, it’s your choices that will pave your path to life. I will not force you to do anything. I have given you a free will to walk with Me or to walk away from Me. I want you to know that you can put on your crown at any time and let people know that you belong to Me. You have a royal call on your life. I want you to remember you wear the crown of everlasting life, and through you I will do abundantly more than you would ever dare to dream.

Love,

                                              Your King and Crown Giver

“Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

Galatians 1:10

This was my devotional today from Sheri Rose Shepherd’s “His Princess: Love Letters from Your King.” I love these devotionals because it reminds me of God’s promises and encourages me to live more deeply for God; not out of fear or uncertainty, but because these words illustrate God’s love and acceptance for me that makes me wonder why I wouldn’t follow Him in everything I do and say. Our culture continues to tell us that our significance comes from acceptance from others. But, this devotional, and God’s Word, tell us something much different! God didn’t make us to fit into this world, we are called to so much more. Our significance …

I am going to share a wonderful dessert recipe that is easy to make and healthy too and would be a delightful cake to take to any Super Bowl party. Before I share the apple cake recipe, I am including links to other recipes we have posted in the past that would also be excellent to make for any Super Bowl party.

Family Favorite Salsa
And don’t forget, the “”Magic button that you see on each one of these recipes is a link to a wonderful website where you can get nutritional information for each of these recipes.

Healthy Apple Cake

This apple cake is moist and full of flavor. You can make it gluten free and it is full of fiber, so as far as a healthy dessert recipe goes, this is a keeper. Since I chop all the apples in a food processor with the peel on and I also chopped the nuts and raisins together in the food processor, it is a quick and easy dessert to make and take to parties.

Ingredients

2 cups flour (you can use gluten free flour here without changing the taste or texture)
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 ½ cups walnuts
1 cup raisins
5-6 large tart apples (4 cups when chopped)
½ cup oil (I use coconut oil)
1 cup sugar (you can use honey, coconut sugar or brown sugar)
2 eggs
1 …

Best Homemade Play Dough

You have probably already seen that “two ingredient play dough” recipe floating around. If you haven’t, don’t worry, I’m going to give it to you. If you have, I have some tips to make the experience fun and successful for you and your kiddos.

IMG_4585

I found this recipe from Discover, Play, Learn.

Best Homemade Play Dough

1 1/2 cups cornstarch

1 cup conditioner

BEFORE YOU START:

Take off any jewelry and/or rings. You do not want to have to clean them out later.

Prepare to get messy.

I made my play dough with a 2 year old (and even let my 10 month old try), so I chose to do the mixing and the food coloring myself. I let Ellie pour the ingredients in the bowl and watch me closely as I kneaded.

NOW LET’S START:

Combine the ingredients in a bowl and knead to combine.

It will be super messy. The cornstarch fluffs up everywhere as you knead, so knead with caution. Like homemade frosting, I find that the recipe will need a little tweaking. The first time I made this I used a really nice conditioner (because I had it laying around), so the measurements were perfect. The second time I used Suave conditioner, which wasn’t as thick, so I had to add a bit more cornstarch.

You will know that your measurements are perfect when the play dough no longer sticks in clumps to your hands. I followed this recipe exactly and then shook bits of cornstarch in the bowl until it stopped being so sticky.

The more you knead the softer it gets.

GET IT PERFECT

I noticed after we started playing that the play dough was a little runny, so I added pinches of cornstarch and re-kneaded until it thickened.

You could do the …

Circle of Family

All the family is gone, decorations have been put away, and festivities are over (Well except for football and the Olympics… those always seem to play a huge role in our society, but anyways… the actual “holiday season” is over). Life has hopefully slowed down a tiny bit so you possibly have had the chance to catch up with yourself. Holidays sometimes hit us like a tornado, and you enjoy them, but it gets crazy. I know for me I don’t always have time to reflect, think, or appreciate the people around me as much as I want to in the moment. I focus on what needs to get done or the event or the next thing. Hence this blog, I want to take a moment to reflect.

I want to take a little time to do a post holiday reflection about the people I have around me. I want to think about my family, friends, and the people that have been a part of the person I am today. If holidays are not an easy time for you, it may easy to think about the possible dysfunction of your family, or the sadness of a loss, or the hard relationships. But I want you to flip that on its head and find good in each person and situation as you think back. The people in our life all play a role in affecting life around us or the person we are. The blessings can be so so big. But also, the hard moments can be so tough.  But each hard moment has the possibility to be a pivotal step towards growing or changing. It also has the potential to be an eye opening experience to see things differently.

So try to see each person in your life as a …

Feeling Important-Honoring a Loved One

When we have opportunities to honor or bless someone we love at a birthday, anniversary or special event, we take the time to think about what that person means to us and try to create ways to make them feel important. We plan a party, we cook their favorite meal or invite over their special friends to help create a celebratory atmosphere. In our family, the honored guest chooses the menu for the meal and we set the special red plate at their place at the table. We incorporate the tradition of going around the table and saying something about the person being honored that day- some way they have blessed us or something about their character that we admire.…
