Bekah’s Whole Wheat Tortillas

As I have mentioned before, it is not always easy to find the healthiest options of food in Grenada. One of these “hard to find healthy options” has been tortillas. They do have them in the store (which we were pleasantly surprised about in the beginning), however, they only have a white flour option. I love whole wheat tortillas, but I was willing to make a sacrifice for the first few months we were in Grenada. When we arrived back to the island after our quick Christmas break, a friend mentioned that she was planning to make her own tortillas. As soon as she started telling me how easy it was, I wondered why I had never considered that! I went right home and started scouring Pinterest for a good recipe! My husband would choose white tortillas over wheat 9 times out of 10 until I found this recipe to make my own whole wheat tortillas from Bran Appetit- Now, he says my tortillas are the best wheat tortillas he has ever had! 😀

Whole Wheat Tortillas

Makes: 12-15 small tortillas

Ingredients:

  • 2 and 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • A little less than 1/2 cup canola oil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup warm water

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, mix the flour, oil, and salt together until the ingredients are mixed and the mixture is crumbly.

  2. Add the warm water and continue mixing until the dough is smooth, about 4-5 minutes.photo-1IMG_2605-1    IMG_2607-1

  3. Roll the dough into 12 balls (or more depending on how big you want each tortilla). The recipe I derived mine from said to let the dough balls rest for 30 minutes, covered, but I have found that it still works to just continue the process once the dough is rolled.image-9

  4. Roll out the dough balls on a floured counter or cutting board until it’s the size you want. Or use a tortilla press! (I ended up buying one of these and I have loved it!!)image-8

  5. Turn the stove to medium heat and let it warm up for 3-5 minutes then add your first tortilla.image-6

  6. Drop the tortilla into the hot pan and let it cook until it is browned or fully cooked on both sides. Repeat with the rest of your tortillas.

  7. Eat fresh (You have to try them fresh- they are delish!) or put them in a bag to refrigerate or freeze for later.IMG_2495

Other tips: Because of the oil, this can become somewhat of a messy process for your hands. I use gloves to avoid having to wash my hands multiple times during the process (I use medical gloves because that is what we have. but I would recommend using food preparation gloves).

If you choose to use a tortilla press, I put saran wrap on the top and the bottom of the press, as well as on the handle to make the cleaning of it easier once I am done.

This can also be a fun way for you to let your kids help you – the tortilla press could be a fun incentive for them to be involved in the kitchen (without making too big of a mess! haha)!

Hope you enjoy them as much as we do!! 😀
